OUR STORY

Kristin Aasmundstad Walsh
Founder & Principal

After eight years of experience in marketing communications, Kristin Aasmundstad Walsh launched KAW Marketing Communications in the fall of 2001, driven by the desire to broaden her experiences, expand her impact, and honor her entrepreneurial spirit. She shares with her clients knowledge gained over 20 years in the field, as well as an inquisitive mind and a passion for telling the story. Eminently curious, Kristin dives into each client's world with gusto, and has become a valuable communications partner to a range of businesses and organizations.

Prior to launching KAW, Kristin was director of marketing for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, a $5 million world-renowned contemporary dance company. Hired as marketing manager, she was promoted to director of marketing within her first year with the company, and planned and executed integrated marketing communications strategies for the performing company, educational outreach program and dance school.

Before joining the arts marketing world, Kristin was associate director of communications at Concordia University for four years, where she was editor of the alumni magazine, The Forester; oversaw all public relations and assisted with multiple other assignments as part of a three-person staff. While at Concordia, Kristin was involved with developing and launching a new graphic identity, alumni magazine and broad-based community visibility initiative.

In her first job out of college, Kristin wrote content for publications for Bethesda Lutheran Communities, where she was coordinator of regional publications—a job that grew out of a summer internship at Bethesda after her junior year in college, where she was delighted to discover an interesting actual job she could do with her English degree.

In addition to her Midwestern roots and Scandinavian heritage, Kristin attributes her can-do spirit to having begun her career in the non-profit world, which pushed her to mine her creativity and wear many hats, both strategic and tactical. Asking questions and telling stories since childhood, Kristin's naturally inquisitive mind drives her passion for helping organizations tell their stories, unearthing gems in unexpected places.

Kristin received a bachelor of arts degree in English (Writing Emphasis) from Luther College, where she soaked up the liberal arts model and rounded out her major with complementary courses in marketing, management, sociology, photography and philosophy. This fostered and further developed her interest in seeing hidden connections between seemingly unrelated ideas and figuring out how best to communicate messages of all kinds. Kristin graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She received a Master of Science in Health Communication degree from Northwestern University in August of 2019.

Also invested in community involvement and giving back, Kristin serves as Trustee on her local library’s board of directors (elected July 2015). She has been program chair of District 44 Lombard Schools’ Music Parents Association, and was selected by organizational leaders to be part of the Search Committee for a new pastor at her church, First Church of Lombard United Church of Christ.

Kristin was a board member of West Suburban Women Entrepreneurs and chair of the Communications Committee for 5 years. She is a founding member of a community band (University Band of Concordia University Chicago), in which she played clarinet for 18 years, and also volunteers at her children’s schools.

In addition to serving as principal of KAW Marketing Communications, Kristin adores music (both playing and listening), words and stories in myriad shapes and sizes, and riding the roller coaster of life with her husband, Jon, and their two young children.
